Information We Collect
We collect information you provide when creating an account and completing your profile, which includes: Identifiers (name, email address, phone number if provided); Commercial information (property preferences, budget ranges, transaction interest); Geolocation (property address for homeowners and neighborhood preferences for buyers — property addresses are precise geolocation data); Financial information (for buyers, uploaded documents such as proof of funds and pre-approval letters, which are treated as Sensitive Personal Information and receive additional protections); Internet activity (pages visited, features used, interaction with matches and messages, referring source, approximate geographic location derived from IP address, browser and device information, session information, clicks, scrolling, and performance and usage information — some of this information is generated through analytics and website-interaction technologies described below); Professional/employment information (if disclosed voluntarily in uploaded documentation); Inferences (compatibility scores and match rankings derived from your profile information). Sources of this information include: information you provide directly, information generated by your use of the platform, and (for property address verification) publicly available records.
How We Use Your Information
Your information is used to match you with compatible buyers or homeowners and to facilitate communication between matched parties. We use your email address to send notifications about matches, messages, and platform updates, which you can manage in your Account Settings. We do not use your personal information for advertising, do not sell it, and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Sensitive Personal Information (financial documents) is used solely for its intended purpose — sharing verification with matched counterparties who have opted in — and is not used for inferences about your character or preferences beyond what's necessary for matching.
Analytics and Website Interaction Technologies
We use Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use OpenKnocks and to improve the performance, usability, and effectiveness of the platform.
Google Analytics helps us understand information such as how visitors arrive at OpenKnocks, which pages they visit, how they navigate the site, general device and browser characteristics, approximate geographic location, and whether important actions are completed. Google Analytics uses cookies and similar technologies to distinguish visitors and sessions and generate aggregated usage reports.
We also use Microsoft Clarity to better understand how visitors interact with the site. Clarity provides behavioral analytics including heatmaps and session replay, which can show interactions such as clicks, scrolling, mouse movements, navigation, and interaction with page elements. Clarity uses cookies and other tracking technologies to associate activity with a browsing session. Sensitive content is subject to Clarity's masking and privacy protections.
We use information from these services for website analytics, troubleshooting, fraud and security monitoring, and improving OpenKnocks. We do not use these technologies to sell personal information or for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Google Tag Manager is used to manage and deploy certain analytics technologies on the site. Google Tag Manager itself is a tag-management tool; the individual technologies deployed through it are described in this Privacy Policy.
Google and Microsoft process information collected through their respective services in accordance with their own privacy policies and contractual terms. Additional information about their privacy practices is available through the Google Privacy Policy and Microsoft Privacy Statement.
Information Sharing
Your property address is never shared publicly or displayed to other users without your explicit approval. Buyers receive neighborhood-level information only until you choose to share more. Personal contact information such as your email address and phone number is never shared with other users through the platform — all communication happens through our secure messaging system. Message content is retained on the platform for dispute resolution and platform integrity purposes, and may be reviewed by moderators if flagged for policy violations.
Data Security
We use industry-standard encryption to protect data in transit and at rest, including property addresses and uploaded documents such as proof of funds and pre-approval letters. Documents uploaded to the platform are stored securely with access restricted to the parties involved in a specific deal. We regularly review our security practices to maintain appropriate protections.
Data Retention
We retain different categories of information for different periods based on their purpose and applicable law. Active account data (profile, preferences, matches, messages) is retained while your account is active. Transaction records — if you complete a real estate transaction with broker facilitation through Stokely Marcus (California DRE License #01874337) — are retained for a minimum of three years as required by California Business & Professions Code § 10148, and up to seven years consistent with California Department of Real Estate guidance and standard broker practice. When you delete your account, your profile is deactivated and hidden from other users; underlying records may be retained for the periods above to comply with legal obligations. Financial documents (proof of funds, pre-approval letters) are retained during the active matching period and any resulting transaction, then subject to the transaction retention rules. OpenKnocks retains its own usage and security logs only for as long as reasonably necessary for security, fraud prevention, troubleshooting, and platform improvement. Analytics providers may retain analytics and interaction data according to their own configured retention periods and policies. For example, Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity maintain data according to the retention settings and policies applicable to those services.
Your Rights
You have the following rights regarding your personal information. Right to know: you can request a copy of the specific personal information we have collected about you in the past twelve months, including categories, sources, business purposes, and any third parties we've shared it with. Right to correct: you can request that we correct inaccurate personal information about you. Right to delete: you can request deletion of your personal information, subject to legal exceptions (see Data Retention above regarding real estate transaction records). Right to opt out of sale or sharing: we do not sell your personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Right to limit use of Sensitive Personal Information: you can request that we limit our use of financial documents and other Sensitive Personal Information to only what's necessary to provide the service. Right to non-discrimination: we will not deny you service, charge you a different price, or provide a different quality of service because you exercised any of these rights. How to submit a request: You can access, update, or delete your personal information through your Account Settings. For requests that require more than what Account Settings allows — including formal right-to-know or right-to-correct requests — please email support@openknocks.com. We will verify your identity before fulfilling requests, typically by confirming account ownership. We will respond within 45 days; if we need additional time, we will notify you and may extend by another 45 days. We may decline requests if we cannot verify your identity, if the request is manifestly unfounded or excessive, or if we have a legal obligation to retain the information (such as real estate transaction records under California law).
Cookies
We use cookies and similar technologies for several purposes.
Some cookies are used for core platform functions, such as maintaining session state and remembering preferences. We also use analytics cookies and similar technologies through Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity to understand how visitors use the site, distinguish sessions, measure traffic and usage patterns, and improve the platform.
These analytics technologies may place identifiers in your browser that allow activity across pages within a browsing session, and in some cases across later visits, to be recognized.
We do not use cookies to sell personal information or for cross-context behavioral advertising.
You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect platform functionality and may also prevent or limit analytics data from being collected.
Third-Party Services
We use a limited number of third-party service providers to operate, secure, communicate through, host, and understand the use of OpenKnocks. These include service providers that support hosting, authentication, email delivery, data storage, analytics, and website-interaction analysis.
Our analytics providers currently include Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. Google Tag Manager is used to manage certain tracking technologies. These providers process information subject to their applicable contractual terms and privacy policies.
We select service providers with privacy and security considerations in mind and limit our disclosure of personal information to what is reasonably necessary for the services they provide.
We do not sell personal information or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not integrate the platform with social-media advertising pixels at this time and do not share platform data with real estate listing services except where separately disclosed or expressly authorized.
Children's Privacy
OpenKnocks is intended for adults over the age of 18 who are engaging in real estate transactions. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. Consistent with the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. We also do not sell or share personal information of minors under 16. If we become aware that a user is under 18, we will delete their account and associated data.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. We will notify you of material changes by email or through a notice on the platform. Continued use of OpenKnocks after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
